Finland Climate

Finland weather is considered to be relatively mild especially in comparison to its geographical position. One of the northernmost countries of Europe, Finland retains a cold-temperate type of climate, its winters being cold and its summers dry and mild. The country is also characterized by its varying annual temperatures and its somewhat meager, although evenly distributed throughout the year, rainfall.

Temperatures during the summer season range between 22°C to 13°C in the south and despite Finland’s latitude retain a sunny and quite mild disposition.
Summer nights in Finland are renewed for their short time span, especially in the northern part of the country where the "midnight sun" phenomenon is more pronounced, its name deriving from the fact that the sun remains sited on its throne above the horizon for several weeks on end.

In sharp contrast, winter is a dark, long, cold and mostly dry time. Finland’s winter season is also characterized by the distinct lack of sunshine, again especially more evident in the northern parts of the country where the sun remains hidden for a period that can last up to two months. The northern parts of Finland see the first cushions of snow forming on the ground as early as November its presence visible until the end of May when it finally begins to melt. In southern and central Finland snow season commences in December and finishes at the end of March.

Weather patterns in Helsinki – Finland’s capital – range between maritime and continental, characterized by warm summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures with temperatures in July average maximum of 22°C and average minimum temperature of 12°C, while the days are long as the sun remains permanently in the sky for up to 19 hours per day during the months of June and July.

As October rolls in, the country falls under a cold spell and days are reduced considerably in length. Winters in Helsinki are harsh with a lot of snow. February – the coldest month of the year – experiences average maximum temperatures of -3°C and average minimum temperature of -9°C.
